My name is Alison, and I live in Adelaide, South Australia.
I've been rather pre-occupied with costumes since about 1996, though some might say that it happened a lot earlier than that. When I was a little girl, I used to make clothes (and the occasional Princess Leia costume) for my barbie doll.
I made about one a year from 1998 until 2001, and then it hit. I was searching for some online resources, because I had seen a costume in 'The Fellowship of the Ring' that I liked and wanted to make. That's when I found LOTR Costume, and then the Yahoo Group. I've been there ever since, studying and making costumes, and learning lots of new skills along the way. It's been a lot of fun, getting all excited about new trailers, footage and images from the films. The films are all over now, but my passion for making the costumes still remains. It appears that my interest is only increasing with time.
Like many of my costumer friends, I have a livejournal where I talk about my latest fabric find, and post progress images of my current projects. At the moment, it's updated more often than my site, so if you are curious, take a peek.
I love costuming because it's nice to find a hobby where a good eye, a perfectionist nature, and obsessive attention to detail are considered good things :) My main interest is in fantasy and science fiction costumes from movies and television. Although I do have an interest in historical costume, it never really grabs my attention long enough to distract me from my other interests. Besides which, the research involved in making historically accurate garb is something that I've not yet learned to enjoy. There is a lot of mis-information out there, and sifting through all of it can be a difficult and very time consuming process.
There are not many events that I can wear costumes to, but I decided a couple of years ago that I would make the costumes that I like anyway, just because I love to make them. Each year brings more and more events and excuses to make and wear costumes.
If you have made any Babylon 5 costumes or plan to in the future, I'd love to hear from you. When I made mine, I didn't have access to the Internet, and it would be excellent to see what others have done, and share notes, especially if you have been lucky enough to see any of the costumes in person.
My closest costumer friend is Silver Moonblaze. She, like me is hopelessly addicted to LotR costumes, but has also made some lovely historical clothing as well. Go check out her site!
